IVF - In-Vitro Fertilisation
What is IVF?
- a technique whereby eggs are fertilised outside the woman's body.
Stages involved:
1. Ovarian Stimulation
- This involved the admnistration of hormone which will stimulate the development of multiple follicles in the ovaries.
2. Oocyte retrieval
- HCG (Hormone similar to LH) given to stimulate ovulation.
- Ovulation is expected to happen after 42 hours of injection
- a needle is used to remove eggs from the ovaries.
3. Fertilisation
- Normally, eggs are incubated with sperms for about 18 hours
- Only when the sperm count is very low, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg.
4. Embryo Transfer
- Embryos are transferred to the patient's uterus through a thin, plastic catheter.
- The woman will be provided with Progesterone to thicken the uterus lining and prepare for implantation
IVF Success Rate
- Both graphs shows that woman's age is very important in determining the success rate of IVF.
One of the most successful IVF ever recorded in history:
Less Than One-Fifth Of Men Get Tested For Infertility
Men are less worried compared to women regarding infertility. Despite the fact that half of the problems are due to the male, with low sperm count as the main cause, reveals a new survey.
According to the survey conducted for SpermCheck Fertility, 42 percent of those who conceived say they became obsessed with getting pregnant once they started trying. Yet just 10 percent say their partner shared this obsession.
"This year, approximately 7 million couples will experience conception issues and about 50 percent of these infertility problems will be directly attributed to the male" -John C. Herr, Ph.D.

IVF Technology is Here to Stay
More than 34 years after the first baby was conceived through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) there are more than five million people born through the technique.
Figures released by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) reveals that over 350,000 babies are conceived every year through IVF which equals to nearly 0.3 percent of 130 million new babies born in the world.

Five or More Cups of Coffee a Day Reduce the Chance of IVF Success
The study was presented today at the annual meeting of ESHRE by Dr Ulrik Schiøler Kesmodel from the Fertility Clinic of Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark. Results showed that the consumption of five or more cups of coffee a day reduced the clinical pregnancy rate by 50% and the live birth rate by 40%.
